I can get a 46,000+ CPU benchmark PC cheaper than the XG-1541 that is 9000+ CPU benchmark. I want to run on bare metal, on third party hardware, to fulfil the gap that netgate have with their hardware. I do not like the idea of virtualising firewalls either (adds complexity). I looked at buying an XG-1541, but its a 6 year old CPU, its noisy because its rack mounted, and these reasons are key as to why people go and buy third party hardware. They just don’t sell hardware that can handle IDS/IPS, PFblocker, and any other additional CPU intensive tasks that make a firewall of today. It seems the pfsense / netgate hardware is designed for basic firewalling / IPsec. I wouldn't deploy Meraki Firewall as it's pretty limiting due to the conformity of their GUI (unless you went Meraki everything which is fine but $$$$$$$), also I'm still RMA-ing Meraki switches for the last year + now due to fan failures.īut avoid Sonicwalls / Watchguard / Sophos / Cyberoam / Checkpoint / Draytek, they are not worth the time / effort in getting working and support are abysmal.I am actively participating in a discussion in reddit, but I’d like to have a similar discussion here. In terms of Firewalls though, Cisco (Not Meraki) / Juniper are the gold standard. There is a learning curve into configuring IDS / IPS / Reporting but can easily be mitigated with a few Google's and research. PfSense on the other hand is great as you can HA it over two VMWare boxes, and OpenVPN on it works great and is ridiculously fast. They come in fast with new features but break lots of old shit, seems like their QA isn't as great anymore.

Personally, I've used a large variety of Firewalls over the last years due to me working at a ISP so I've deployed them all.įortinet / pfSense would be the only two I would be confident into recommending to anyone, with Fortinet just ensure your not on the bleeding edge of software updates though.

What Firewalls do you guys have on your networks that you would recommend or stay away from? Would only need the usual functionality (Traffic Rules, QOS, Content Filtering etc) and would like to have a VPN server built in where I can install a client on the users machines.Īny advice or recommendations would be welcomed I have used Fortinet for a number of years and found them great but as it’s a blank canvas I think it’s worth looking at the competition. I haven’t confirmed the budget with the FD but kind of have a feeling I can pull between 1-2k for each firewall from capital budget.

I haven’t completed my full audit of the whole network as they have multiple sites however what is apparently is they need some firewalls.Ĭurrently they have a couple of Draytek Vigor Firewall/Router (can’t remember the model off the top of my head but a basic home type model) which has a basic IPSec VPN connection the between the core 2 sites. Have started at a new company a few weeks back as their first in-house IT Manager and basically looking to improve on the previous few contractors bad habits.
